PrEP cost in Bangkok & Thailand: prices for pills, tests and injections

A tipped-over glass jar with banknotes and coins spilling out

In Bangkok, a first PrEP visit with consultation, blood tests and a month of generic pills typically costs about 3,300–4,800 baht, and repeat months cost much less; this guide breaks down the PrEP cost in Thailand item by item.

The figures below are approximate market ranges we found in public price listings from several Bangkok providers, checked in October 2026. They are not our clinic’s prices. Prices change, so we confirm the full price before you start, with nothing added afterwards.

What you actually pay for

The total is made up of three parts. Knowing them helps you compare offers that look cheap on the pills but leave out the tests.

  • Consultation: a doctor reviews your health, explains the options and writes the prescription.
  • Tests: an HIV test, kidney function and hepatitis B before you start, with STI screening where relevant. You can read why each matters in our guide to the tests you need for PrEP.
  • Medicine: the pills themselves, priced per bottle of 30.

Extra checks, such as swabs for chlamydia and gonorrhoea, a hepatitis C test or vaccinations, are usually charged on top. Ask which tests a package includes, because two quotes that look alike can cover quite different things.

Your first visit is the most expensive, because it includes the full set of baseline tests. After that, most of the cost is the medicine plus an HIV test about every three months.

Over a year, PrEP in Thailand will cost a visitor much less than in countries where branded pills are expensive without insurance. Even so, the yearly PrEP cost in Thailand adds up, so it helps to budget for tests as well as pills.

Approximate PrEP prices in Bangkok

These ranges are rounded and labelled approximate, checked October 2026. Individual providers may sit above or below them.

First visit cost breakdown

Item Approximate price (THB) Notes
Doctor consultation 500–800 Sometimes bundled into a package
Baseline blood tests 2,000–2,500 HIV, kidney, hepatitis B, often syphilis
HIV test on its own About 800 Used at follow-up visits
30 generic pills 750–1,500 Depends on brand
Typical first-visit total About 3,300–4,800 Bundled first-month packages fall in a similar range

A follow-up visit with a consultation and an HIV test usually comes to around 1,300–1,600 baht before medicine. Kidney tests, when due, add to that.

Pill prices by brand and supply length

Medicine 30-day supply (THB) 90-day supply (THB)
Generic TDF/FTC (Teno-EM, Tenof-EM, Ricovir-EM) About 750–1,500 About 2,250–4,500 for pills alone
Three-month generic programme with tests Not applicable About 5,800–6,500
Truvada (original brand) About 3,000–3,500 About 9,000–10,500
Injectable PrEP (cabotegravir) Ask us Market listings about 15,000–20,000 per injection

Buying three months at once rarely changes the price per bottle much, but some providers bundle tests and the consultation into longer packages. That can make the overall PrEP cost in Thailand lower than paying for each visit separately.

Generic or Truvada: is the cheaper option as good?

Generic TDF/FTC contains the same two active ingredients as Truvada: tenofovir disoproxil and emtricitabine. Generics sold in Thailand are registered with the Thai regulator, and when taken as prescribed, PrEP reduces the risk of HIV from sex by about 99%, according to the CDC.

If you compare PrEP in Thailand on price alone, generics nearly always come out ahead. The main differences are the packaging, the tablet’s look and the price. Some people prefer a familiar brand for travel; most choose a generic and spend the difference on regular testing. Our article on generic PrEP brands in Thailand compares them in detail.

Daily, 2-1-1 and injectable PrEP compared on cost

How you take PrEP changes how quickly you use up a bottle, so it also changes your monthly spend.

Monthly cost by way of taking PrEP

Way of taking PrEP Pills or doses used What it means for cost
Daily pills About 30 a month One bottle a month plus three-monthly tests
2-1-1 on demand 4 pills per episode of sex A bottle can last longer if sex is occasional
Injectable cabotegravir An injection every two months after the first two Much higher; ask us whether it is available

On-demand dosing can be cheaper, but it is only for cis men who have sex with men and trans women not taking estradiol-based hormones. It does not suit vaginal or front-hole sex, or anyone with hepatitis B. Our 2-1-1 dose timing calculator shows how many pills a weekend would use.

Comparing PrEP by injection in Thailand, price is the main barrier: one injection costs roughly what a year of generic pills would. It also needs regular visits for the injection and HIV tests, so ask us about availability and the full plan before deciding.

Free PrEP for eligible Thai citizens

Since 2021, PrEP has been included in the free prevention benefits of Thailand’s public health coverage for eligible Thai citizens. The package covers the pills and the key tests at participating hospitals and services. It built on years of groundwork: in 2018, UNAIDS reported on Thailand bringing PrEP to scale through its national health system. Our guide explains who qualifies for free PrEP in Thailand.

Foreign visitors and most expats are not covered by this scheme and pay privately. If you are a Thai citizen, ask your registered hospital about eligibility first. People under social security or civil servant benefits should also ask how PrEP is arranged under their own scheme, as access can differ by hospital. For an overview of every route, see our guide on how to get PrEP in Thailand.

Keeping costs down without cutting corners

  • Ask for the full price, including tests, before you agree to anything.
  • Choose a generic unless you have a specific reason for the brand.
  • Avoid buying pills without tests; treating HIV that was missed costs far more than a test.
  • Take pills on time, so you don’t pay for extra tests after a gap; our page on what to do after a missed PrEP pill explains why.
  • Check with your insurer; preventive medicines are often excluded, so keep receipts anyway.
  • Plan refills before a trip; see our PrEP advice for travellers in Thailand.
